Semen analysis evaluates the following parameters:
Total sperm present. Counts below 15 million/ml can reduce the chance of fertilization.
Percentage of sperm actively moving forward. At least 40% should show forward progression.
Percentage of normal-shaped sperm. At least 4% should havea normal form for best fertility potential.
High levels may indicate inflammation or infection.
Abnormal pH may suggest ejaculatory duct dysfunction or blockages.
Total amount of semen. Low levels may indicate blockage or low fluid production.
